ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Thousands of mourners across Pakistan are participating in 9th Muharram processions today to commemorate the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. The solemn observances are taking place under stringent security arrangements as authorities seek to ensure the peaceful conduct of religious gatherings throughout the country.
The 9th and 10th of Muharram hold immense significance for Muslims, particularly for those who observe the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Majalis and mourning processions are being organised in cities and towns across the country, with participants paying tribute to the enduring message of sacrifice, justice, patience and steadfastness associated with Karbala.
To maintain law and order, federal and provincial authorities have implemented extensive security plans. Police, Rangers and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed along procession routes, while surveillance has been strengthened through CCTV cameras, walk-through gates, metal detectors and monitoring systems at sensitive locations.
Security officials said special attention is being given to major urban centres where large gatherings are expected. Checkpoints have been established at entry and exit points of procession routes, while emergency response teams and medical services have also been placed on standby.
In Lahore, the central 9th Muharram procession commenced from Pando Street in Islampura and is expected to conclude at Khaima-e-Sadaat Imambargah after passing through its traditional route. Additional police personnel have been deployed along the route, while surveillance teams continue to monitor activities throughout the day.
In the federal capital, Islamabad, the main procession began from Imambargah G-6 Ithna Ashari. Several roads surrounding the route have been closed to traffic, and citizens have been advised to use alternative routes. Karachi, which hosts one of the country’s largest Muharram gatherings, has also witnessed heightened security. The city’s main procession started from Nishtar Park following a majlis addressed by religious scholars. The procession is moving through its traditional route, including Shah Nawaz Bhutto Road and M.A. Jinnah Road, before concluding at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar. Law enforcement agencies have established monitoring points and security barriers along the route.
In Multan, the central mourning procession emerged from Mumtazabad Imambargah under strict security arrangements. Authorities are using advanced surveillance systems to monitor the movement of participants and maintain public safety.
Peshawar is also witnessing multiple processions from various imambargahs across the city. Officials said security and administrative preparations were finalised well before Muharram, with police and other agencies working closely to ensure smooth observance of religious activities.
In Quetta, the Shabeeh Zuljanah procession is being taken out from Nasir-ul-Aza Imambargah. Authorities have suspended mobile phone services in selected areas and sealed roads adjoining procession routes with containers as a precautionary measure. Markets and shops located along the routes have also remained closed during procession timings.
Traffic diversion plans have been implemented in several cities, and citizens have been urged to remain informed about alternative routes. Authorities have also appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement personnel and report any suspicious activity immediately.
Religious leaders have emphasised the importance of maintaining peace, harmony and unity during Muharram observances. They have urged mourners to uphold the values of patience, tolerance and discipline that reflect the spirit of Imam Hussain’s (RA) sacrifice.
Officials expressed confidence that the comprehensive security measures and coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies would help ensure the peaceful and orderly observance of 9th Muharram processions across Pakistan. As mourners continue to gather in large numbers, the nation remains united in remembering the timeless lessons of Karbala and the sacrifices made for truth and justice.
