ISLAMABAD –The federal government has announced a three-day public holiday on the occasion of Eid al-Adha 2026, according to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Wednesday.
The notification stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved May 26, 27 and 28, 2026 — Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday — as public holidays for Eid ul Adha celebrations across the country.
Pakistan is set to observe Eid ul Adha on May 27 after the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee confirmed the sighting of the Zilhaj moon on May 17.
The announcement was made following a meeting held at the Pakistan Meteorological Department office in Karachi under the chairmanship of Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad.

Addressing a press conference, the Ruet committee chairman said credible testimonies regarding moon sighting were received from various parts of the country, leading to a unanimous decision that the first of Zilhaj 1447 AH would fall on May 18.
Eid ul Azha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command before a ram was divinely provided in his place.
The religious festival is marked by special prayers, family gatherings and the ritual sacrifice of livestock, with meat distributed among relatives, friends and underprivileged communities.
