LAHORE: Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) President Mian Abuzar Shad has raised alarms over Pakistan’s worsening water crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for action. Speaking on the occasion of World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, he highlighted the rapidly declining per capita water availability and the country’s inability to manage its precious water resources effectively.

Mian Abuzar Shad noted that World Water Day was formally initiated by the United Nations in 1993 to promote global awareness about water management. However, in Pakistan, the situation has grown dire, with major reservoirs like dams reaching their dead levels, pushing the nation towards a severe water shortage.

He revealed startling statistics, stating that around 35 million acre-feet (MAF) of water is wasted every year as it flows into the sea due to insufficient water storage facilities. This wastage costs Pakistan an estimated $15 billion annually. He further pointed out the economic devastation caused by the 2022 floods, which inflicted losses exceeding $35 billion on the country.

To address the crisis, the LCCI President stressed the urgent construction of new dams, including the controversial Kalabagh Dam, to increase water storage capacity. He also urged the government to adopt advanced water management systems to prevent wastage and ensure efficient utilization of available resources.

Mian Abuzar Shad also called for a global campaign to counter India’s alleged “water aggression.” He accused India of violating the Indus Waters Treaty and depriving Pakistan of its fair share of water. He urged international organizations to intervene and press for the equitable distribution of water resources.

Concluding his remarks, the LCCI President underscored the significance of sustainable water management for Pakistan’s economic stability and the survival of its future generations. He called on the government, industry leaders, and the general public to unite in addressing the growing water crisis, warning that inaction would have catastrophic consequences.

World Water Day serves as a crucial reminder of the challenges ahead, and for Pakistan, decisive action is imperative to safeguard its water resources and secure its future.
