UBG and BMP unite to revive economy; business leaders urge government to consult real stakeholders on reforms

By Commerce Reporter

LAHORE: The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Regional Office Lahore witnessed a significant development as former Federal Minister for Commerce Dr. Gohar Ejaz, United Business Group (UBG) Patron-in-Chief S.M. Tanveer, Businessmen Panel (BMP) Chairman and former FPCCI President Mian Anjum Nisar, FPCCI Vice President Zaki Ejaz, and other business community leaders announced a united economic front during a joint press conference.

They declared that the UBG and BMP groups have joined hands for the “battle for the economy,” stressing that just as Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir strengthened national defence and stabilized the country, the business community would steer Pakistan toward economic revival through unity and collective effort.

The leaders urged the government to stop relying on a few elites and instead introduce economic reforms in consultation with more than 400 chambers and FPCCI leaders across the country. They also demanded immediate renegotiation of agreements with remaining Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to reduce tariff burdens.

They said Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir had safeguarded national interests and made the country resilient, and the business community now reaffirms its resolve to make Pakistan economically strong. They cautioned the government against making decisions with a handful of privileged individuals and emphasized that genuine reforms must be shaped through consultation with the real business community. They stressed that IPP agreements should be revised through negotiations to bring down rates.

Despite IMF constraints, they said, Pakistan must stand on its own feet — a goal the business community is firmly committed to.

Business leaders S.M. Tanveer and Mian Anjum Nisar said that Syed Asim Munir has elevated Pakistan’s standing globally, and the business community stands shoulder to shoulder with the Pakistan Army. They asserted that the business sector is the frontline force supporting the government in achieving economic progress.

Head of Pakistan’s business community Dr. Gohar Ejaz said that long-standing differences within the business community have been resolved and all stakeholders have now been brought together under one umbrella. He urged the government to sit with the business community to address concerns over high interest rates, electricity and gas prices, and excessive taxation. He reaffirmed their commitment to building Pakistan into a strong economic power.
