LAHORE: Enforcement team of Punjab Food Authority has registered a case and discarded 400kg of expired, foul smelling meat during a raid at an illegal godown in Bakra Mandi, Lahore. Operation was carried out under the directions of PFA Director General Muhammad Asim Javaid.
PFA’s Food safety team found rotten meat placed directly on broken and unhygienic floors. Meat was reportedly being prepared using sick poultry and waste parts of animals under extremely unsanitary conditions.
DG Asim Javaid said the warehouse was operating in severe violation of food safety laws and had no compliance with hygiene or quality standards. Food safety team in the presence of police officials, discarded the entire stock of unhygienic meat on spot and initiated legal proceedings against those involved.
He said that the meat was intended for supply to local shops and markets which could have posed a serious health risk to the public. Timely action of PFA successfully foiled the attempt to circulate diseased and expired meat in the city’s food chain.
Director general advised citizens to refrain from purchasing precut or prepacked meat and instead ensure that poultry is slaughtered in their presence. He has requested the public to play their role in eliminating food related crimes by reporting any suspicious activity to the PFA helpline 1223.
