ISLAMABAD – The federal government has announced a significant increase in the prices of petroleum products, with petrol and high-speed diesel both seeing sharp hikes, effective from July 16, 2025.
According to a notification issued late Monday night by the Ministry of Finance, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs5.36 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) has seen a rise of Rs11.37 per litre. The revised prices will be applicable for the next fortnight as per the government’s bi-weekly pricing mechanism based on global oil trends and exchange rate fluctuations.
Following the increase, the new price of petrol stands at Rs275.62 per litre, and high-speed diesel is now priced at Rs287.33 per litre. The hike is expected to have a cascading effect on transportation costs and inflation, particularly impacting goods transport and agriculture sectors that rely heavily on diesel.
Officials attributed the increase to rising international crude oil prices and depreciation of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar. “Adjustments are made in line with global oil market dynamics,” the notification stated.
This is the second consecutive increase in petroleum prices within a month, putting additional financial pressure on the already burdened public. Economists and business leaders have expressed concern that the repeated hikes will further fuel inflation and impact the purchasing power of the common man.
Public reaction has been largely negative, with social media flooded with criticism and calls for relief measures from the government.
