Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline could resolve 80pc of energy issues, says Punjab governor

By Asim Shehzad

LAHORE – Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has said that completion of the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project could resolve around 80 percent of Pakistan’s energy-related challenges, stressing that improved bilateral relations between the two countries provide an opportunity to move forward on major economic and energy initiatives.

Talking to The Tribune International, the Punjab Governor said Pakistan-Iran relations are currently at an ideal level and recalled that President Asif Ali Zardari had signed an agreement regarding the gas pipeline project. He said the completion of the project would play a significant role in addressing Pakistan’s energy requirements.

“The Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project is important for the country’s energy security. If completed, it can help resolve a major portion of Pakistan’s energy problems,” he said.

Sardar Saleem Haider Khan also spoke about the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) role in legislation and public welfare, saying the party has always supported laws aimed at protecting the rights of citizens and journalists.

He said during the PPP-led federal government in 2013, significant increases were made in the salaries of government employees, while various steps were taken for public welfare and economic improvement.

The Punjab Governor said criticism against the PPP during that period was often unfair, but the party did not introduce laws restricting media freedom. “Those who criticised us at that time are now witnessing the challenges being faced by the media,” he said.

Commenting on the reduction in Punjab’s development budget, Sardar Saleem Haider Khan said the decision was taken due to the country’s current circumstances, particularly the need for additional resources amid security challenges and the Pakistan-India war situation.

He said all stakeholders had taken the decision collectively, adding that Sindh had also witnessed a reduction in development funds. According to him, such measures were necessary considering the prevailing national situation.

The Punjab Governor highlighted the importance of youth participation in politics, saying young people are the country’s future and their involvement is essential for national progress.

“If politics is done with pure intentions, it is no less than an act of worship,” he said, encouraging students and young people to actively participate in political and social activities.

He praised PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, describing him as a capable leader and a strong voice for the youth. He said young students represent hope for Pakistan and can contribute significantly to the country’s development.

Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, who is also Chancellor of several universities, said students facing injustice from university administrations, vice chancellors or syndicates have the right to approach the Governor’s Office for relief.

He assured students that the doors of the Governor House remain open for resolving their legitimate concerns.

During the interaction, the Governor answered questions from students, who appreciated his welfare initiatives and expressed interest in contributing voluntarily to social causes.

The Governor said welfare projects were being implemented with the support of philanthropists, adding that donors have confidence that their contributions are reaching deserving individuals.

He reiterated his commitment to addressing the issues faced by underprivileged segments of society and improving public welfare through collective efforts.
