BASRA (The Tribune International) — Iraq have unveiled their final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with head coach Graham Arnold placing his trust in the experienced group of players who helped the nation secure a historic return to football’s biggest stage.
The Lions of Mesopotamia will compete in the World Cup for the first time in 40 years after sealing qualification with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bolivia in April. Arnold’s selection reflects continuity and stability, with many of the players who played key roles during the qualification campaign retaining their places in the squad.
Leading Iraq’s attack is veteran striker Aymen Hussein, who remains one of the team’s most influential figures. The experienced forward is expected to carry much of the goalscoring responsibility in North America, supported by a talented attacking unit that includes Ali Al-Hamadi and rising stars Ali Jassim and Youssef Amyn.
One of the notable decisions in Arnold’s squad announcement was the exclusion of defender Dario Naamo. The full-back, who previously represented Finland at youth level, recently switched his sporting nationality but did not make the final cut.
In midfield, Iraq will rely on a blend of creativity and European-based experience. Players such as Zidane Iqbal and Aimar Sher are expected to play central roles as the team prepares to face elite international opposition.
Arnold has also opted to keep goalkeeper Kamil Saadi involved during the training camp as additional cover, ensuring the squad remains prepared for any injury concerns before the tournament begins.
Iraq face a difficult challenge in Group I, where they have been drawn against former world champions France, African heavyweights Senegal and a talented Norway side.
