BEIJING (Web Desk) – China has described the United States midterm elections as an internal matter and reiterated its readiness to strengthen communication and cooperation with Washington, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
At a press briefing in Beijing, a ministry spokesperson said China was prepared to work with the United States to implement understandings reached by the two countries’ leaders. The spokesperson emphasized continued engagement, despite the political changes reflected in the US elections.
The comments came as the results reshaped the political balance in Washington and raised questions about the direction of US domestic and foreign policy. China’s statement did not assess the election outcome or speculate on how it might affect relations between the two countries.
The spokesperson also addressed developments in the Middle East and the Gulf, saying China would continue to strengthen dialogue with Saudi Arabia, Iran and other countries in the region.
Beijing said it supported resolving differences between Iran and the United States through dialogue and negotiations. The spokesperson stressed that diplomatic engagement remained important to addressing regional tensions and avoiding further escalation.
China’s position comes amid continued concern over security in the Gulf and the wider Middle East. The region’s political and security challenges involve multiple countries, with competing interests and longstanding disputes complicating efforts to reach durable agreements.
The Chinese statement emphasized communication as a means of managing those differences. It did not announce a new mediation initiative or provide details of any specific diplomatic talks involving Tehran and Washington.
China has maintained relations with both Iran and Saudi Arabia and has repeatedly called for political solutions to regional disputes. Its latest remarks highlighted the importance Beijing places on keeping channels of communication open among regional governments and external powers.
The US election results could also influence the domestic political environment in which the administration pursues its agenda. With the opposition gaining greater congressional power, lawmakers may seek to challenge government policies, conduct oversight and shape legislative priorities.
However, China’s spokesperson avoided linking the election outcome to any expected change in bilateral relations. Instead, the statement focused on the consensus reached by the countries’ leaders and the need to continue working through established channels.
Relations between Beijing and Washington remain shaped by a range of issues, including trade, security and regional affairs. The spokesperson’s comments offered no indication that those disputes had been resolved, but reiterated China’s preference for continued communication.
In the Middle East, Beijing’s call for negotiations reflects concern that tensions between Iran and the United States could have consequences beyond the two countries. The Gulf is strategically important to energy markets and international shipping, making stability a priority for regional and global powers.
China said it would continue engaging with countries in the region. The statement did not specify when further discussions might take place or whether Beijing would take on a formal role in any future negotiations.
The remarks presented dialogue as the preferred path for addressing disputes, both in China’s relationship with the United States and in the wider regional context. Beijing said it remained willing to cooperate with Washington while supporting diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the Gulf.
