Jaswinder Bhalla, a cherished icon of Punjabi cinema known for his comedic brilliance, died at 65 on Friday morning at Fortis Hospital in Mohali.

His funeral is scheduled for Saturday in Balongi, where numerous colleagues and friends from the Punjabi film industry are expected to gather to honor his memory.

With a career spanning nearly three decades, Bhalla won hearts with his impeccable comic timing and iconic roles. He debuted in films with Dulha Bhatti and gained recognition in Jaspal Bhatti’s satirical classic Mahaul Theek Hai (1999).

His performances in blockbuster films like Jatt and Juliet, Sardaar Ji, and the Carry On Jatta series, particularly as Advocate Dhillon, made him a household name. Bhalla’s witty catchphrases and unique style ensured even brief roles left a lasting impact.

His final role was in the 2024 film Shinda Shinda No Papa, alongside Gippy Grewal and Hina Khan, reflecting his enduring presence in the industry.

Beyond the screen, Bhalla was a devoted family man, survived by his wife, Parmdeep, a fine arts teacher in Chandigarh, and his son, Pukhraj Bhalla, an actor who followed in his father’s footsteps. Originally an engineer, Pukhraj transitioned to acting, notably sharing the screen with his father in the 2013 film Stupid 7, a moment treasured by fans.

Jaswinder Bhalla’s passing leaves a void in Punjabi cinema, but his legacy of laughter and unforgettable characters will live on.
