ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched a nationwide initiative to distribute 500,000 Chromebooks and provide internet facilities to talented students across Pakistan over the next two years.
The programme aims to improve access to digital education for students enrolled in schools and religious seminaries, enabling them to develop modern skills and compete internationally.
Addressing the launch ceremony, the prime minister said financial constraints should not prevent talented students from achieving their educational goals. He emphasised that providing young people with access to technology was essential for building a skilled and educated nation.
Under the initiative, Chromebooks will be distributed strictly on merit. Selected students will also receive school bags and internet devices to support online learning and access to digital educational resources.
Shehbaz said the programme would allow students to benefit from online courses, electronic libraries and other learning materials beyond the classroom, creating more opportunities for academic growth.
He recalled that 600,000 laptops had previously been distributed among students on merit over the past decade under an educational initiative launched during former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s tenure.
The prime minister also appreciated the contribution of the Tokyo Technology Care Foundation and overseas Pakistanis towards the country’s digital education efforts.
Highlighting other government initiatives, he said Danish Schools were providing free education, accommodation and meals, while 27 additional schools were under construction across the country.
Shehbaz expressed hope that the Chromebook programme would strengthen students’ digital skills, support their pursuit of higher education and improve their prospects for dignified employment.
He urged students to focus on education and use the available resources to develop their abilities and contribute to Pakistan’s progress.
