ABU DHABI (Web Desk) – France and the United Arab Emirates have renewed cooperation on the next-generation Rafale F5 fighter programme, seeking to strengthen defence ties and expand joint industrial and technological development.
The agreement was signed during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Abu Dhabi, where he met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Both leaders witnessed the exchange of a Strategic Defence Partnership Framework and an agreement on defence industry cooperation.
The renewed initiative follows earlier disagreements over funding and access to sensitive military technologies. The programme is estimated to cost around €5 billion, while the UAE had previously considered contributing up to €3.5 billion. However, the latest agreement does not confirm whether the proposed contribution will be restored or whether France will provide access to the disputed technologies.
The UAE is also seeking to strengthen its domestic defence industry through EDGE Group, which operates across advanced weapons, electronic warfare, cybersecurity and unmanned systems. Macron’s visit included a tour of an EDGE industrial facility, highlighting opportunities for expanded cooperation between French and Emirati defence companies.
The Rafale F5 is expected to feature improved radar, electronic warfare systems, communications and engine capabilities. It is also designed to operate alongside a future unmanned combat aircraft, enhancing reconnaissance and strike operations.
The renewed partnership builds on the UAE’s 2021 order for 80 Rafale F4 fighter jets in a deal valued at approximately €16.6 billion, including associated equipment and support.
Both countries are seeking to deepen strategic cooperation in defence, artificial intelligence, energy and advanced technology as they pursue stronger industrial capabilities and regional security partnerships.
