India face batting concerns after successive T20 series defeats

India's batting has come under scrutiny after consecutive T20 series defeats against England and Ireland, raising concerns ahead of the upcoming ODI series.

India face batting concerns after successive T20 series defeats

SOUTHAMPTON (Web Desk) – India’s batting lineup has come under intense criticism after the Twenty20 World Cup champions suffered consecutive T20 international series defeats against England and Ireland, exposing weaknesses that former cricketers believe must be addressed before the team’s upcoming One-Day International campaign.

England completed a dominant 4-0 series victory over India after winning the fifth and final T20 International by 56 runs at Southampton. The opening match of the series had ended without a result because of rain, leaving the hosts unbeaten throughout the contest.

The defeat followed India’s disappointing 2-0 series loss to Ireland last month, marking successive T20 setbacks for a team that had entered the season with high expectations after lifting the T20 World Cup title.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik questioned the team’s ability to adapt to overseas conditions, particularly pitches offering extra bounce.

Speaking after the series, Karthik said India’s batters appeared uncomfortable throughout the tour and failed to display the confidence that had become their trademark during the World Cup and previous bilateral series.

He observed that the middle order struggled to build partnerships and looked uncertain against disciplined bowling attacks.

According to Karthik, the aggressive batting approach that once intimidated opponents appeared to have disappeared during the England tour.

India captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged that adapting to changing conditions proved difficult for his team.

He said frequent travel between venues created additional challenges, with varying ground dimensions, pitch behaviour and weather conditions making it harder for players to settle quickly.

Iyer admitted the team failed to adjust as effectively as expected, allowing England to maintain control throughout the series.

The newly appointed T20 captain said the squad would carefully review its performances and work on improving adaptability before future assignments.

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar also expressed concern over India’s performances with the bat, describing batting as the team’s greatest strength that had unexpectedly become its biggest weakness.

He said when the strongest department of a team underperforms, it inevitably places additional pressure on bowlers and fielders.

Gavaskar stressed that stronger batting performances are essential if India hopes to return to winning ways against top international opposition.

Renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle described the defeat as a valuable learning opportunity rather than a crisis.

He said England had outplayed India by successfully executing an aggressive style of cricket that many believed had become India’s own identity in the shortest format.

Bhogle noted that recognising weaknesses now could ultimately help India improve before major international tournaments.

He suggested that accepting the shortcomings exposed during the series would allow the coaching staff and players to make necessary adjustments.

England consistently dominated the contest with disciplined bowling, aggressive batting and sharp fielding, preventing India from establishing momentum at any stage of the series.

The hosts successfully restricted India’s scoring while capitalising on key moments to maintain pressure across all departments of the game.

India’s batting order repeatedly struggled to produce substantial partnerships, with top-order wickets falling regularly and the middle order failing to accelerate during crucial stages of the innings.

Cricket analysts believe the team’s difficulties reflected not only technical shortcomings but also challenges in adapting to unfamiliar playing conditions.

Despite the disappointing results, selectors and coaches are expected to continue backing the core group of players as preparations shift toward the 50-over format.

Attention will now turn to the upcoming three-match One-Day International series against England, where India will aim to restore confidence and demonstrate improvements in both batting and overall performance.

The ODI series provides an important opportunity for the team to regain momentum after a difficult T20 tour and silence growing criticism surrounding its batting unit.

Team management is expected to analyse the lessons learned from the recent defeats while focusing on consistency, adaptability and stronger partnerships as India looks to bounce back against the same opponents in a different format.
