COLOMBO (Web Desk) – A violent prison riot at Negombo Prison has left at least 26 people dead and more than 100 injured, marking one of Sri Lanka’s deadliest correctional facility incidents in recent years and raising renewed concerns about prison overcrowding, gang violence and institutional security.

The clashes broke out inside the high-security prison after rival criminal groups allegedly engaged in fierce fighting that quickly spread across several sections of the facility. Authorities said the unrest escalated overnight, forcing prison officials and emergency services to launch a large-scale response to contain the violence and prevent a mass escape.

Among those killed were inmates as well as prison guards who attempted to restore order during the disturbance. Officials said several victims suffered gunshot wounds while others sustained severe injuries caused by sharp weapons and physical assaults.

Emergency medical teams rushed to the prison after authorities declared a crisis. Ambulances transported dozens of injured inmates and prison staff to nearby hospitals, where doctors worked through the night to provide emergency treatment.

Hospital officials confirmed that many of the injured required immediate surgery, while critically wounded victims were transferred to larger medical facilities in Colombo for specialized treatment.

Authorities said the violence began after tensions between rival drug trafficking groups housed inside the prison intensified. Investigators believe the confrontation rapidly escalated into large-scale fighting involving dozens of inmates before spreading throughout parts of the prison complex.

Prison officials acknowledged that maintaining control became increasingly difficult as prisoners attempted to overpower security personnel. During the chaos, several inmates reportedly gained access to weapons belonging to prison guards, significantly increasing the danger for both staff and prisoners.

Officials also confirmed that a group of inmates attempted to force open the prison’s main exit in an apparent escape attempt. Security personnel managed to prevent the breakout after reinforcing the prison’s entrances and surrounding the facility with additional police officers.

Outside the prison, anxious relatives gathered in large numbers seeking information about family members believed to be inside the overcrowded jail. Authorities established security cordons around the prison while emergency vehicles continued transporting injured victims.

Additional law enforcement units were deployed throughout the surrounding area to prevent any further disturbances and ensure public safety.

Government officials described the incident as a national tragedy and expressed condolences to the families of those killed. Authorities pledged a full investigation into the circumstances that allowed the violence to spiral out of control.

Justice officials said prison administrators had begun relocating inmates believed to be linked to rival criminal organizations in an effort to prevent additional clashes.

Security agencies are also examining how inmates managed to obtain weapons and whether intelligence warnings about gang tensions were overlooked before the violence erupted.

The riot has once again drawn attention to Sri Lanka’s overcrowded prison system. Official figures indicate that correctional facilities across the country house inmate populations several times greater than their intended capacity.

Experts say overcrowding creates significant challenges for prison authorities by increasing tensions, limiting supervision and making it more difficult to separate rival criminal groups. Human rights organizations have repeatedly urged the government to improve prison conditions and invest in modern correctional facilities.

Sri Lanka has experienced several serious prison disturbances in recent years, including deadly riots during the COVID-19 pandemic when overcrowding and health concerns triggered unrest in multiple correctional institutions.

Criminal justice analysts say organized crime networks continue to operate inside some prisons, making effective inmate management increasingly complex for correctional authorities.

Following the latest violence, authorities are expected to review existing prison security protocols, inmate classification procedures and emergency response systems. Officials have also indicated that recommendations for improving prison infrastructure and reducing overcrowding may be considered as part of broader correctional reforms.

Investigators continue collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and examining surveillance footage to determine exactly how the violence began and identify those responsible for instigating the riot.

As the investigation proceeds, Sri Lankan authorities face mounting pressure to strengthen prison security, improve inmate management and address long-standing structural problems that experts believe contributed to one of the country’s deadliest prison riots in recent history.
