ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) The federal government said on Thursday that Afghan Taliban forces opened unprovoked fire at several points along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, drawing what officials described as an immediate and effective response from Pakistan’s security forces.
In a statement shared on social media, the Ministry of Information said Afghan forces initiated firing across multiple sectors, which was countered promptly by Pakistani troops. The government termed the action a “miscalculation” and maintained that Pakistan responded to safeguard its territorial integrity.
According to the statement, clashes were reported in the Chitral, Khyber, Mohmand, Kurram and Bajaur sectors. Authorities claimed that Afghan posts and equipment were damaged during the exchange, and early reports indicated casualties on the Afghan side.
Security sources said Pakistani forces carried out counterattacks targeting positions across the border from areas including Arandu in Chitral, Nawagai in Bajaur, Tirah in Khyber and parts of Mohmand district. Two Afghan posts were reportedly destroyed in the Bajaur sector.
The latest escalation comes days after Pakistan conducted cross-border strikes in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktika provinces. Officials had stated that the strikes targeted militant camps allegedly involved in attacks inside Pakistan, including incidents in Islamabad, Bannu and Bajaur during Ramazan.
At the time, the government said the operations were intelligence-based and aimed at facilities linked to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which the state refers to as Fitna-al-Khawarij, as well as Islamic State-Khorasan affiliates.
Officials reiterated that Pakistan would take all necessary measures to ensure the security of its citizens and defend its borders.
This is a developing situation, and further details are expected as authorities continue to assess developments along the frontier.
