LAHORE –The Human Rights and Minority Affairs (HR&MA) Department, Government of Punjab, organized a dignified and well-attended ceremony at a local hotel in Lahore to mark International Human Rights Day 2025.

Provincial Minister for Minority Affairs Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora attended the event as chief guest, while Parliamentary Secretary for HR&MA Sonia Asher, members of parliament, senior government officials, and representatives of the Christian, Sikh, and Hindu communities participated in large numbers.

In his welcome address, Secretary HR&MA Farid Ahmad Tarar highlighted the global significance of Human Rights Day and its universal message of equality and dignity. He stated that the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees equal rights and protection to all citizens, including minorities, women, youth, and other vulnerable groups. He reiterated the Punjab government’s commitment to building a humane, inclusive, and equitable society through people-friendly policies.

The secretary also appreciated the support of UNDP representative Madiha Fareed and her team, announcing that a comprehensive Human Rights Information System would soon be developed in collaboration with UNDP.

Deputy Director Muhammad Yousaf conducted the proceedings and ensured smooth coordination throughout the event.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora said the Punjab government was taking concrete and holistic measures to promote human rights, strengthen interfaith harmony, and protect and empower minority communities. He emphasized that a tolerant, just, and equitable society is essential for sustainable peace and development.

Parliamentary Secretary Sonia Asher said that legislative reforms, institutional strengthening, and social inclusion initiatives were being actively pursued to further safeguard the rights of women, children, and vulnerable segments of society.

The ceremony was also attended by Rev. Dr. Majid Abel, FACES Pakistan Chairman Javed William, and other prominent religious and social leaders.

A poetry session featuring noted literary figures, including Prof. Dr. Abida Ashraf, Chairperson Human Rights Chair at the University of the Punjab, Dr. Aaliya Khalid, Assistant Professor at the Department of Social Work, University of the Punjab, and AIG (Legal) from the Home Department, added cultural depth to the event.

A powerful theatrical performance titled “Jeena Hai Ya Marna Hai” captivated the audience by portraying the emotional journey of a young girl striving for freedom, dignity, and fundamental rights, leaving a lasting impact on participants.

The event concluded with the distribution of honorary shields to human rights activists, social leaders, and minority representatives in recognition of their outstanding contributions. The ceremony drew participation from officials of various government departments, parliamentarians, academics, civil society members, religious leaders, youth volunteers, and human rights defenders.
