The closing ceremony of the men’s Asia Cup turned into controversy on Sunday as the Indian cricket team refused to collect the winners’ trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi. What should have been a moment of celebration for players and fans descended into embarrassment, once again proving that politics in cricket has killed the sportsman spirit.

Extremism Overshadows Cricket

India’s refusal to receive the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi cannot be seen in isolation. Analysts believe this act reflects the growing Hindutva extremism that has gripped Indian institutions, including sports. Instead of representing unity and sportsmanship, Indian cricketers bowed to political pressure, exposing the mindset of those who see every platform as an extension of divisive politics.

The Indian team’s gesture not only dishonored the tournament organizers but also hurt millions of cricket fans across Asia who wanted to witness a moment of harmony. By refusing to accept the trophy with grace, the Indian camp displayed arrogance and intolerance that are becoming hallmarks of India’s global image.

Politics Has Killed Sportsmanship

Sports have historically been a bridge between nations. Cricket, in particular, has been a symbol of South Asian unity despite political differences. However, Sunday’s shocking incident demonstrated that India is unwilling to separate politics from cricket.

Such behavior from professional athletes undermines the very foundation of sports, which rests on respect, fair play, and unity beyond borders. The refusal to accept the trophy is not merely a symbolic act; it is a deliberate insult to the host, the organizers, and the spirit of the game. It confirms that India’s political establishment wants to extend its Hindutva-driven ideology into sports, using cricket as another tool of propaganda.

Why Did India Refuse the Trophy?

Several factors appear to explain India’s decision.

  1. Political Pressure: With Mohsin Naqvi serving as the ACC chief, Indian officials allegedly pressured the team to avoid any gesture that could be seen as cooperation with Pakistani leadership.
  2. Hindutva Mindset: The growing dominance of extremist ideologues like the Yadave-led Hindutva lobby inside Indian institutions has created an environment where even cricket is controlled by political dictates.
  3. Deliberate Provocation: Refusing the trophy seems like a calculated move to insult the organizers and fuel anti-Pakistan sentiment among domestic Indian audiences.

Whatever the reasons, this act reflects a dangerous politicization of cricket that threatens regional harmony.

Heavy Penalties Must Be Imposed

The Asian Cricket Council and the International Cricket Council (ICC) must take strict action against India’s behavior. Heavy penalties, including fines and potential bans, should be considered to discourage such unsportsmanlike conduct in future tournaments. Allowing this precedent to stand would encourage other teams to mix politics with sports, destroying the integrity of international cricket.

Cricket is loved precisely because it transcends borders. When players act as political pawns, they betray the trust of fans and damage the credibility of global competitions. By penalizing India, cricket’s governing bodies can send a strong message: sportsmanship will always come before politics.

Hindutva Extremism Has No Humanity

The Indian team’s action highlights the inhuman face of Hindutva extremism. Instead of celebrating victory with humility, Indian cricketers demonstrated hostility that had no place in sports. Humanity demands respect, compassion, and recognition of shared values, but Hindutva politics has blinded Indian leaders and athletes alike.

From stadiums to diplomatic platforms, India’s obsession with politicizing everything has reached alarming levels. The trophy snub is not just an insult to Pakistan but a betrayal of cricket itself. It shows that extremists have no glimpse of humanity left, choosing hatred over harmony.

Conclusion

The Asia Cup final should have been remembered for sporting excellence, but India’s trophy refusal has made it a dark chapter in cricket’s history. By allowing extremist politics to guide their actions, Indian players undermined the essence of the sport. Unless governing bodies act decisively with penalties, cricket risks being overshadowed by political agendas. Sports are meant to unite — India’s behavior has done the exact opposite.
