LAHORE:The 34th International Conference on Sufi Tradition, organized by the World Punjabi Congress (WPC), is in full swing at the Pak Heritage Hotel, Lahore, drawing scholars, writers, and cultural enthusiasts from across the globe. The event focuses on the enduring relevance of Sufi teachings in addressing contemporary challenges.
WPC Chairman Fakhar Zaman and Gurbajhan Gill inaugurated the five-day event, celebrating the spiritual and literary contributions of Sufi saints from Baba Farid to Ghulam Farid “Sufism teaches us that God is love, not hostility,” Zaman stated. “Its timeless message fosters interfaith harmony, peace, and inclusivity, vital for healing societal divisions.”
The conference, abuzz with energy, features keynote addresses, cultural performances, and scholarly discussions, exploring the historical and contemporary significance of Sufi traditions in Punjab. Delegates stressed the urgent need to embrace the Sufi ethos of love and compassion to counter societal fragmentation and promote mutual understanding.
Zaman also addressed the plight of minorities, urging leaders to adopt the teachings of Sufi saints to ensure equality and dignity for all. “Sufism underscores the sanctity of life and calls for protecting the rights of every individual,” he remarked, emphasizing inclusivity as a cornerstone of governance.
Prominent Contributions:
The Congress has brought together notable Indian journalist Jagtar Singh Bhullar, who called for collective efforts to promote Sufism and Punjab’s rich cultural heritage. Esteemed scholars Dr Gurdeep Kaur, Dr Gulroop, Dr. Gurcharn Kochar, Karam Sundhu, Harminder Singh, Sadnam Singh, (Permjit Sidhu Pami Bhai)and Punjabi writer Dr. Kanwal Saba contributed to the discussions, further enriching the event’s intellectual depth. Promoting Punjabi Media and Culture:
Sugar Sadaf, a speaker at the event, lamented the underdevelopment of Punjabi print and electronic media, stressing that Punjabi television could only flourish with government support. She urged policymakers to prioritize Punjabi heritage as a cultural asset.
As the Congress continues with vibrant participation and passionate dialogue, it serves as a beacon of hope for fostering unity and harmony through Sufi teachings. The event’s dynamic atmosphere and global engagement highlight the timeless relevance of Sufi wisdom in creating a more peaceful and inclusive world.
