WASHINGTON, November 5 (The Tribune International) — Democrats scored major victories in the first state and local elections since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House, signaling growing voter frustration over the struggling economy and rising living costs.
The party clinched governor’s races in Virginia and New Jersey, swept all three Pennsylvania Supreme Court contests, and won key ballot initiatives in states ranging from Colorado to Maine, a strong showing that many see as a warning sign for Trump’s GOP ahead of the 2026 midterms.
In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer and moderate Democrat, made history as the state’s first female governor, defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill, a Navy veteran and congresswoman, captured the governor’s office, cementing Democratic control of the state. Both candidates focused on pragmatic solutions to economic issues rather than party ideology.
The victories came as Americans voiced frustration with rising costs of groceries, energy, and healthcare, which Trump’s administration has struggled to contain. According to the AP Voter Poll, half of voters in Virginia and most in New Jersey named the economy as their top concern, while many in New York City pointed to the cost of living crisis.
Trump, who campaigned only minimally, had urged Republican candidates to tie themselves to his record. But that strategy backfired, as many voters treated the elections as a referendum on his leadership. About 6 in 10 voters in key states said they were “angry” or “dissatisfied” with the nation’s direction, underscoring the growing discontent.
Adding to the night’s surprises, Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, won the New York City mayoral race, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest in more than a century. His victory energized progressives but also sparked concern among moderates and business circles.
Beyond the East Coast, Democrats notched further wins. In Pennsylvania, they secured all three Supreme Court seats, giving the party a stronger hand in future redistricting and election-related cases. Maine voters rejected a Republican-backed voter ID measure, while Colorado approved a tax hike on high earners to fund school meal programs. In California, voters endorsed Proposition 50, a redistricting initiative expected to add up to five new Democratic House seats.
Despite limited contests this year, analysts say the 2025 results reveal a potential Democratic comeback strategy: embracing centrist candidates who focus on pocketbook issues and public safety, while avoiding divisive ideological battles.
For Trump’s Republican Party, however, the message was stark. Economic anxiety — once a core strength of Trump’s populist appeal — now appears to be eroding GOP support, leaving Republicans searching for answers before the crucial 2026 elections.
