ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) -Jammu and Kashmir President Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry has passed away at the age of 71 following a prolonged illness, the Pakistan Peoples Party’s media office confirmed on Friday.
According to the statement, Chaudhry died in Islamabad. His funeral prayers will be offered tomorrow at 3 p.m. in his native village of Chichiyan, Mirpur.

Chaudhry was elected AJK prime minister in 1996 and later became president in 2021. He also served nine terms as a member of the AJK Legislative Assembly from Mirpur, making him one of the region’s most experienced political figures.
His death comes just days ahead of Kashmir Solidarity Day, observed annually on Feb. 5 to express support for the Kashmiri people.
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over the passing, offering prayers for Chaudhry’s forgiveness and extending condolences to his family, while praising his national and political contributions as “invaluable.”
Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani described Chaudhry as a principled and dignified leader, noting his efforts to raise the Kashmir issue internationally and calling his political journey an inspiration for future generations.
