The officer said that Naveed Asghar, the brother of the late actress, reached Karachi from Lahore on Thursday. He met with South SSP Mahazoor Ali and Gizri SHO Farooq Ahmed Sanjrani, and formally expressed his desire to take his sister’s body back to Lahore for burial.
DIG Raza confirmed that the body would be handed over to Naveed Asghar for this purpose.
Earlier in the day, the Sindh Culture Department had offered to arrange Humaira Asghar’s burial if no family member came forward, amid reports that her family had refused to take custody of the body. The offer came after claims circulated that the actor’s family had declined to conduct her last rites.
DIG Raza told reporters that the police initially contacted the family in Lahore, but her father allegedly refused to accept her body. Following this, several fellow actors reached out to the authorities, offering to oversee her burial arrangements.
On the investigation front, DIG Raza said the police are awaiting histopathological and chemical examination reports to determine the exact cause of death. He assured that if foul play is confirmed, an FIR will be registered, and legal action will be taken accordingly.
In response to various claims made on social media by a supposed friend of the deceased, DIG Raza said the woman’s mobile phone has remained switched off despite repeated attempts to contact her. He noted that no individual has approached the police formally in this regard.
The 42-year-old actress’s body was found in a flat located in Ittehad Commercial area of DHA Phase-VI. Police say she had likely been dead for at least two weeks before the discovery. Her remains were found when police, acting on a court order, broke into the apartment to carry out an eviction due to non-payment of rent.
Police are still probing the timeline of her death, suspecting that it might have occurred even earlier than initially estimated.
