India’s top Civil Award for a Pakistani: What really happened in Mina?
ISLAMABAD (News Desk) – A Pakistani man, Asif Bashir, has become a symbol of cross-border humanity after being nominated for one of India’s highest civil honors. Bashir’s bravry actions during Hajj 2024 saved 44 lives, including 24 Indian pilgrims, amid life-threatening conditions in Mina.
The incident, which took place during an intense heatwave, saw Bashir single-handedly rescue pilgrims by physically carrying them to safe place despite the lack of immediate medical aid. His selfless acts have earned him an invitation from the Indian government to receive the prestigious award on January 26, 2025.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the heroic act, ordering an inquiry into the rescue operation through the Foreign Office and the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Officials have been directed to determine whether Pakistani representatives in Saudi Arabia were aware of Bashir’s extraordinary deeds.
Sources suggest the government is considering officially recognizing Asif Bashir’s exceptional contribution before he is honored in India.
